Highland Park 56 is the oldest and rarest whisky we have ever created, with a remarkable flavour to match: intensely aromatic, but with a wonderfully clear expression of our Orkney heathered peat smoke. It was crafted from an exceptional line of casks, first laid down in 1968 and hand-selected for further aging in 2008 by our Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion, and comes in a unique presentation case and decanter that pay tribute to the more than half a century of craft that have gone into its making—as well as the centuries of Orkney creativity that have inspired it.
In 2008 Gordon Motion selected ten special casks, first laid down in 1968, that contained whiskies of an unusual flavour profile—both complex and intriguingly ethereal—that showed potential for further ageing. To further develop the flavour of each of these casks, he decided to marry and re-rack them in a series of first-fill sherry-seasoned Oak casks. The 56 is made entirely from one of these casks, a never-before-tasted, sherry-seasoned, first-fill American Oak Puncheon that became ready for bottling in 2024.
